Top 100 Daily Newspapers Rankings Published by BurrellesLuce

Daily Newspaper Saturday Circulation Figures Included In Report For The First Time

LIVINGSTON, NJ (June 9, 2004) — A unique chart of the circulation of America’s top 100 daily newspapers is included with the current issue of The BurrellesLuce Media Report, and is being made available free of charge as a resource to professionals in the public relations, corporate communications and investor relations industries, the company announced today. The data was compiled by BurrellesLuce from the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ figures for the six months ended March 31, 2004.

This is the first Top 100 Daily Newspaper Rankings report published by BurrellesLuce since the company’s announced global rebranding initiatives last month.

According to the BurrellesLuce report, the top newspapers are USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. The top seven-day-a-week newspapers are The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, (NY) Daily News, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Newsday and Houston Chronicle.

Among the seven-day-a-week newspapers, the top 10 Sunday newspapers are, in order of circulation, The New York Sunday Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, New York Sunday News, Sunday Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle and Detroit News and Free Press.

For the first time, the BurrellesLuce list includes Saturday circulations in the daily figures. Daily newspapers in several major cities (notably Chicago and New York) have smaller circulation on Saturdays, usually due to decreased newsstand sales in business areas. A few newspapers have higher circulations on Saturdays, usually because they publish combined editions (morning and afternoon newspapers), include special weekend sections and are in markets with mostly home delivery.

Among the 1,456 daily U.S. newspapers, 787 are morning editions and 680 are afternoon, which includes 11 all-day. Total daily circulation is 55,185,351 and Sunday circulation of 917 newspapers is 58,494,695, according to Editor & Publisher.
