BurrellesLuce Exec to Explore News-Sharing Copyright Issues At PR Leadership Summit Hosted by Kent State University

LIVINGSTON, NJ (February 26, 2008) A top executive of the country's largest media monitoring and measurement firm will lead a seminar on "Copyright Compliance in the Digital Age" at Ohio's Kent State University on Friday, March 7.

Steve Shannon, executive vice president of BurrellesLuce, will provide an authoritative look at the issues surrounding copyright, a subject that has drawn heightened attention in the public relations field with the ascendancy of digital news delivery.

The seminar is part of a daylong conference called “You Too: Social Media Boot Camp & Leadership Summit.”  Kent State has organized the event in conjunction with the grand opening of Franklin Hall, the new home of the university’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  The event also will mark a homecoming for Shannon, who is an alumnus of the school.

BurrellesLuce is a co-sponsor of the program, along with the university, the Akron Area chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and PR Strategist, a monthly journal produced by the national PRSA.  All proceeds will go to the PRSA Akron Area student scholarship fund.

A 16-year veteran of the public relations industry, Shannon oversees sales, client services, marketing, and product development for BurrellesLuce.  He is active in several professional organizations, including PRSA and the Paley Center for Media.

His is an authoritative voice on the issue of copyright compliance within the media monitoring field.  Shannon has emphasized that, although content is increasingly easy to share, even the most well-intentioned sharing of news clippings can unwittingly violate copyright law.

“As publishers look to monetize their content, wherever it appears, a
more aggressive education and enforcement program has public relations
professionals on their radar,” he has remarked.  The seminar he conducts at Kent State will make PR practitioners more aware of copyright issues and will outline the steps they can take to ensure compliance with copyright rules.

Kent State’s leadership summit is a perfect venue, and Steve Shannon is an ideal person, to discuss the current state of copyright compliance as it affects public relations practitioners,” said Robert C. Waggoner, chairman of BurrellesLuce.  “Our company has made a strong commitment to help PR professionals learn about the permissible uses of news content.  We are privileged to join Kent State, the Akron Area PRSA, and PR Strategist in sponsoring the conference.”

BurrellesLuce recently published a white paper titled “Copyright Compliance: What Every Media Relations Professional Needs to Know.” It is available free of charge by visiting www.burrellesluce.com/copyright1 or calling 866-260-0851
